Storm Benjamin was a named storm that brought strong winds and heavy rain to parts of the UK, especially Northern Ireland and Scotland, in January 2022. It was the second storm of the 2021–22 season, following Storm Arwen.

What was Storm Benjamin?

Storm Benjamin was named by Met Éireann, the Irish meteorological service, on 6 January 2022. The Met Office issued yellow weather warnings for wind and rain across Northern Ireland, western Scotland and parts of north-west England. The storm tracked eastwards across the Irish Sea, bringing gusts of up to 70 mph in exposed coastal areas and persistent rainfall that caused localised flooding.

Where did Storm Benjamin affect the UK?

The worst impacts were felt in Northern Ireland and western Scotland. In Northern Ireland, fallen trees and power lines disrupted travel and left thousands of homes without electricity. Scotland saw heavy rain that led to swollen rivers and surface water flooding on roads. The storm had largely passed by the evening of 7 January, though a trailing band of rain continued across northern England.
